Get Rid Of Social Anxiety - Imagine It
By: Jane Renshaw - One helpful technique for dealing with social anxiety disorder is to imagine ourselves playing out the situation we are afraid of. Many people already do this, but it is not controlled.
You can run the situation through your head like a movie, and play it out exactly how you want it to. First, select something that makes you feel uncomfortable, such as making a phone call or talking to an employer.
Use your own methods of relaxation to calm yourself down before tackling your goal. Close your eyes as you take relaxing breaths and feel the air travelling to your lungs and feel your stomach lifting, before the air gently flows out again. Be aware of the sensations you feel as you fall into relaxation. Allow any tension to pour out of your being.
Vividly imagine your chosen situation. Put as much into it as you can and just observe what is happening. Now, when you are ready, place yourself into the scene and start running through it in your mind. Control yourself exactly how you would want the scene to run - calm, mastered, and successful. If at any time, you begin to feel anxious, stop and give yourself a moment to relax again. Using positive affirmations can help.
Continue to run the situation in your head until you are pacing through it with comfort and no feelings of anxiety. If you are having trouble, putting someone similar in your place and running them through your imagination may be easier until you can imagine yourself completing the task.
When you are able to comfortably do this for a few minutes, you are doing very well. Running a situation positively through your mind before performing the task can make the job much less daunting. It is certainly better than letting your sub conscious take over with images of horror and the worse things that could happen.
This is a coping technique, so using it alone can result in slow progress. It is very useful in itself, but the best way to cope with social anxiety is to set out a plan of action and completely overcome it.
Jane Renshaw recovered from social anxiety disorder after nearly 20 years of suffering. She is the author of "How to Overcome Social Anxiety in 5 Easy Steps". This ebook puts emphasis on how even the worst sufferers can overcome their social anxiety permanently. You can get more information at http://www.social-anxiety-revealed.com
